“Didn’t your mother ever teach you to keep your hands to yourself?” Aurora asks in a dulcet tone.

“No. I was raised by a cheap slag like you.”

Another rumble of laughter issues from the other patrollers.

I’m just waiting for Aurora to explode. My fists are balled up, and my mind is racing for a way out of this that doesn’t end with us running from Kazir with an entire fleet on our six.

Aurora looks the bot up and down. “Hiding behind that hunk of metal leaves a lot to the imagination. You probably lost the genetic lottery, am I right? And now you take out your frustrations on women because not even the cheap slags will touch you without getting paid up front.”

The bot takes a quick step forward and plants the barrel of his rifle under Aurora’s chin, forcing her head back at an awkward angle.

She’s smiling now. “What’s the matter, did I hit a nerve?”

The blank black screen of the bot’s face glows to life and a ruggedly handsome face appears. So much for Aurora’s theory. This guy’s just a misogynistic asshole. “You were saying?” he growls.

Aurora smiles. “Uglier than a crobbin’s backside.”

“Just space her, Vance! She’s a bot, and a criminal. We’ll say she made a play for your gun, and that will be the end of it.”

“I ought to, right? Any last words, fembot?”

“My name’s Aurora,” she says through gritted teeth.

I’m just about to make my move.

But she beats me to it, yanking the rifle away from her throat and spinning it around. It goes off with a crack before flying out of the bot’s hands. The beam glances off the bulkhead behind her. She turns the rifle on the bot in front of her and shoots it in the face. It lunges toward her, that holoscreen back to blank and sparking. Aurora takes a quick step back and shoots it twice more, straight through the eyes. Now it’s swiping around blindly. Aurora is matching her movements to his, backing steadily out of the airlock and keeping the bot between her and the rest of them like a shield.

“Shoot her!” one of the other five says.

“I can’t get a clear shot!”

I’m sneaking around behind them, stealing down the side of the airlock. I manage to reach the controls and the doors to the hangar before one of them notices me.

“Hey, what are you—”

I open the hangar doors and dive through before cycling them behind me. The airlock slams shut in my wake, leaving those patrol bots locked inside. I quickly override the sequence and lock both sides. The feed from the ship’s internal cameras reveals Aurora by the lift tubes with that blind bot swiping around angrily. She shoots it again, this time straight through the bot’s central processor. It collapses with a noisy clatter. She looks straight up at the holocam, as if she knows I’m watching. “Better hurry.”

I nod at that, and run across the hangar to the assault shuttle. The landing ramp isn’t down, and their airlock isn’t open.
